Lesson 57

At the doctor’s

I. Revision

1. Check the homework exercises.

2. Revise illnesses (headache, backache, toothache, cough, cold, etc). Practice a dialogue with the Ss:

A: what’s the matter?

B: I’ve got a headache.

A: oh dear! Why don’t you have a rest?

B: I think I will.

See if the Ss can make suggestions for the other illnesses (see a doctor/stay in bed/take some medicine/drink some hot water, etc)

II. Presentation

Part 2. Talk about the picture. Teach the words examine and patient. Ask the Ss to read the dialogue and find out what the matter with Sharon is. Allow the Ss a few moments to find the answer. And then answer the question: Why does she have a pain? See if the Ss can guess the meaning of ripe. Go through the dialogue with the Ss and make sure the Ss understand it. Explain any difficult language points.

3. a bit 程度副词 “一点儿” = a little 用于口语

I’m a bit tired; I’d like to have a rest.

You’re driving too fast. Could you drive a bit slower?

4. advise sb. To do sth.

I advised him to stay here a bit longer.

What do you advise me to do?

5. in future=from now on; in the future=in time yet to come

You’d better not go out alone in future.

No one knows what will happen in the future.

II. Dialogue

Speech Cassette Lesson 57. Play the tape for the Ss to listen and repeat. Then let the Ss practise the dialogue in pairs.

III. Pairwork

Part 2. Go through the phrases and make sure the Ss understand them. Then let the Ss work in pairs. Finally , see if the Ss can make up complete dialogues about a visit to the doctors.

IV. Consolidation

Revise the dialogue in SB Lesson 57, part 2.

Homework

Finish the Workbook exercises.

Write down some of the sentences in the exercise book.

Lesson 58

What is a healthy diet?

I. Revision:

1. Check the homework exercises.

2. Revise illnesses and the dialogue in SB Lesson 57.

II. Preparation for reading

Let the Ss do the following:(give the names of them)

Chinese food Western food

Ask the Ss todo it in their exercise books, then say Today we are going to read about a healthy diet. “Diet” means the food we eat. Read the passage and make notes in your exercise books about Chinese food snd Western food. Let’s see which is the better diet.

III. Reading

Part 1.Let the Ss read the passage. Then they can check their notes in pairs and with the whole class. Their notes should show the Chinese food is healthier.

e.g. Chinese food Western food

a lot of fruit and too much fat

too much sugar

green vegetables

rich in fibre

low in sugar

Ex .1. Go through the exercise and make sure the ss understand the sentences. Then let them work in pairs. Check the answer with the whole class. Deal with the language points.

1. burn up “烧掉”、“烧毁”、“消耗掉”

He burned up all the old letters.

The house burned up before the firemen got there.

2. as much/many as “多达”、“到达……的程度”

In the countries of Black Africa, there are as many as 700 languages.

He is strong enough to carry as much as 200jin.

II. Quiz

Part 2. Let the Ss work in small groups to work out the answers.

III. Consolidation

Revise the contents of the reading passage. Say Tell me about the Chinese diet. Why is it very good? What is wrong with the diet in some Western countries?

Homework

Finish the workbook exercises.

Write down a dialogue like the one in Ex.3.

Revise the reading passage in Lesson 58.

Lesson 59

I. Revision

1. Check the homework exercises. Ask some Ss to act out the dialogue in Wb Lesson 58,Ex.3. or their own dialogue.

2. Revise the contents of the reading passage in Lesson 58.Ask What do Chinese people like to eat? Why are these foods healthy? What about people in some Western countries?

II. Reading

Part 1. Today we are going to read about some western foods that we can buy in China. Read this passage and find out why these foods are not healthy. Allow the Ss a few moments to read the passage, then collect the answers. Ask What happens to people who have too much of these foods?(Die from heart illnesses; have weight problems; have bad teeth). Go through the passage with the Ss and deal with the language points.

1. diet/food

diet 指的是习惯或规定的食物,特指维持健康的定量定质的食物,如病人的疗养饮食。 Food 是一般的用语,凡能吃喝的具有营养的东西都称为food.

We must have food to eat and clothes to wear.

The sick man must not go without food, but he must have a diet without sugar.

3.注意下列构此法:

1) 名词+后缀 y~ adj

healthy, bloody, funny, shady, starry

2) 前缀un+adj.~ 反义词

unkind, uncomfortable, uneasy, uninteresting, unhealthy, unimportant, unnecessary, unpleasant

III. Practice

Part 2. do the first part with the whole class. Ask them to go back to the two passages again if they have difficulty giving the answers.

Do an example of the dialogue with the whole class, then let the Ss work in pairs. Get some pairs to act out their dialogue.

IV. Discussion

Part 3. Revise the language of discussions first:

What do you like? In my opinion…; I agree/don’t agree,etc. Then let the Ss work in pairs. Finally hold a class discussion.

Homework

Finish the workbook exercises.

Write down your answers to the questions in SB Lesson 59, Part 3.

I. Revision

1. Check the homework exercises.

2. Ask What do doctors say about hamburger restaurants/eating a lot of sugar/eating foods which are high in fat?

II. Preparation for listening

Page 121.

Now listen to the tape. Some people are talking about their problem. Where are they? Who are they waiting to see? Go through Ex.1 and make sure the Ss know what to do.

III. Listening

Cassette Unit 15. For Ex.1, do an example with the whole class, then let the Ss work alone. They can check their answers in pairs, and then with the whole class. Repeat for the other exercises.

IV. Language study

Part 2. Ask the Ss for advice /suggestions. Say I have a headache/have a weight problem/feel tired. What should I do? Then focus on the different ways of giving advice and making suggestions. Collect them on the Bb:

I advise you to/not to…;

You’d better(not)…;

I suggest (that) you…;

Why not…?

Why don’t you…?

V. Practice

Part 3. Make up one or two dialogues with individual Ss, then let the Ss work in pairs. Get some pairs to act out their dialogue for the rest of the Ss.

VI. Checkpoint

Go through Checkpoint 15 and revise the phrases and useful expressions. As usual, deal with any other language points that the Ss wish to raise. Refer to the grammar notes in the Appendix of the Ss’ Book.

VII. Test

Get the Ss to write five sentences giving advice and making suggestions to a friend who wants to improve his/her English.

VIII. Writing

Part 4. Revise the format of a friendly letter, and discuss with the whole class the advice that they might offer. Let the Ss write their letter in their exercise books first. Then they discuss it with a partner and make changes as necessary.

Homework

Write the letter to the friend who is ill as neatly and as accurately as possible.

Finish the workbook exercises.
