Teaching Steps for SEFC Book 1A

Unit 1 The summer holidays

Lesson 1

Step 1 Introduction

1 If you are a new teacher for the Ss, introduce yourself to the class: Hello, everyone. My name's .... I'm your English teacher this year.

1 Go around the class and get individual Ss to introduce themselves. Say Hello! What's your name ? Nice meeting you, etc.

Step 2 Dialogue

Tell the Ss Now we are going to listen to two people. Bill and Harry, meeting for the first time. Listen carefully. What questions does Bill ask ? Speech Cassette Lesson 1. Play the tape for the Ss to find the questions What's your name? Which school were you at last year? Do you know him (Bob White)? When the Ss have found the questions, they should listen one more time to the tape and get the answers to these questions (Harry;

Centre School; they were in the same class). SB Lesson 1, Part 1. Books open. Go through the dialogue with the Ss. Deal with any language points.

Notes:

a Sure. = Certainly.

b I must be off now.= It's time for me to go now. c Nice to meet you/Nice meeting you. = It was nice to meet you.

Play the tape for the Ss to listen and repeat. Then let them practise the dialogue in pairs.

Step 3 Presentation

Ask two Ss to come to the front of the class. Find out their names. Use their names to make an introduction:

T: (Sl), I want to introduce my friend, (S2).

Sl: Hello.

S2: Hello.

Repeat with other Ss. Then get one student to make the introductions. Play the tape of the second dialogue in Part 1 for the Ss to listen and repeat.

Then let them practise it in pairs.

Wb Lesson 1, Ex. 1. Do questions and answers in pairs.

Step 4 Practice

Ss work in small groups introducing each other, using the second dialogue as a model.

Step 5 Oral practice

SB Lesson 1, Part 2. Work with the whole class first of all. Ask different Ss: What did you do in the summer holidays? Use the questions in SB Part 2 as a guide. Teach the phrase in your opinion (= What do you think?).

Let the Ss ask and answer in pairs. Get some Ss to report their partners' answers to the whole class. If you wish, get the Ss to write three or four sentences saying what their partners did in the summer holidays.

Step 6 Workbook

Wb Lesson 1, Exx. 2 and 3. First get the Ss to do the exercises in pairs and then check the answers with the class. See the key to the exercises in the Appendix at the back of this book.

Step 7 Consolidation

Revise the dialogues in Part 1. Get the Ss to make up similar dialogues.

Homework

Finish the Workbook exercises.

Write down the answers to Ex. 1 in the exercise book.
