Unit 1 The summer holidays

Lesson 4

 

Step 1 Revision

1 Check the homework exercises.

2 Revise the expressions for sending good wishes in SB Lesson 3, Part 3.

Step 2 Preparation for listening

Ask some Ss What did you do in the holiday? Which places in China do people like to visit for a holiday? Make a list on the Bb. Then say Today we are going to listen to some friends talking about their holidays.

 

Step 3 Listening

Listening Cassette Unit 1. Workbook page 127. Go through each task before you play the tape and make sure the Ss understand what to do. Let the Ss check their answers in pairs, then with the whole class. Play the tape to check the answers. Ex. 1 practises listening for specific words (names); Ex. 2 specific information; Ex. 3 is an optional exercise which helps revise the everyday English expressions.

BRUCE: How was your holiday, Zhou Lan?

ZHOU LAN: Wonderful! I went to Nanjing and spent a week there. I made some friends. We went to Xuan Wu Lake and Zhongshan Ling and had a wonderful time. What about you. Tang Lin?

TANG LIN: I didn't go away. ZHOU LAN: Why was that?

TANG LIN: Well, my mother was ill.

ZHOU LAN: Oh. I'm sorry to hear that.

LI XIAOJUN: Where did you go, Bruce?

BRUCE: I went back to Australia. I spent one week with my parents and two weeks

by the sea.

LI XIAOJUN: Did you have a good time?

BRUCE: It was great!

ZHOU LAN: What about you. Fang Qun? Where did you go?

FANG QUN: Nowhere! I failed my maths exam! So my parents made me study during the holidays.

BRUCE: Bad luck! What about you, Li Xiaojun?

LI XIAOJUN: I went to Dalian for a week.

BRUCE: Did you enjoy yourself?

LI XIAOJUN: I ate some bad fish and was ill. So I stayed in bed for a week.

ZHOU LAN: Oh dear! Are you better now?

LI XIAOJUN: Yes. Better, but thinner!

Suggested answers:

Ex. 1: Bruce, Zhou Lan, Li Xiaojun, Fang Qun,

Tang Lin. Ex.2: Bruce: Australia; 1 week with his parents, 2 weeks by the sea.

Zhou Lan: Nanjing; made some friends, Xuan Wu Lake and Zhongshan Ling.

Li Xiaojun: Dalian; ate some bad fish, ill in bed for a week.

Fang Qun: Nowhere; studied. Tang Ling: Nowhere; mother was ill.

Step 4 Checkpoint

Go through Checkpoint 1 and make sure the Ss have grasped the language points in this unit, Spend some time dealing with any other language points that you feel needs revision. Also, ask the Ss to tell you if they have any difficulties that they would like you to cover. Refer to the grammar notes in the Appendix of the Students' Book. Practise the useful expressions. Wb Lesson 4, Ex. 3.

Step 5 Test

Make four statements. Then ask the Ss to write down suitable questions to which these statements are answers, e.g.

T: I went to Qingdao last week. Ss could write: Where did you go for your holiday?

1 Charlie lives in the States.

2 I bought three new books last month.

3 Steve and Jane are going to a party next Sunday.

4 Bob White was at Centre School last year. Suggested questions:

1 Where does Charlie live?

2 Did you buy any new books last month?

3 What are Steve and Jane going to do next Sunday?

4 Which school was Bob White at last year?

Step 6 Word study

SB Lesson 4, Part 2. Practise the pronunciation of the school subjects and make sure the Ss can translate them into Chinese. Get some individual Ss to make statements as examples. You can say Which school subjects are you good at/not very good at? Then let the Ss work in pairs. One student talks about himself/herself, then the other has a turn. If you wish, ask some Ss to make a report about their partners to the class.

Step 7 Workbook

Wb Lesson 4, Exx. 1 and 2. The two exercises should be done orally in class.

Step 8 Writing

SB Lesson 4, Part 3. Ss can write their letters in their exercise books. They show it to their partners and make any changes that they decide are necessary.

Homework

Write the letter again as neatly and as accurately as possible.

Finish the Workbook exercises.
