Teaching Plan for

Unit 3 What were you doing when the UFO arrived? (Go For It) SectionA 2a,2b,2c

Part1 Analysis of the students

Students in junior 2 have the basic abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing

to some degree. But their habits of learning English haven’t been formed well during this age. On the one hand, there’s no language background in this mountain area. On the other hand, they are lack of self-control and self-confidence in English study. So, as their teacher of English, I will try to teach them with more interesting teaching methods and modern facilities to attract them and help them to set up confidence of learning English and form good habits of learning English with more patience and love.

Part2 Analysis of teaching material

This lesson is the second period of Unit 3, which is about the usage of the past continuous tense in the adverb clause of time leaded by“when”or “while”.It’s the consolidation of the past continuous tense.

Part3 Analysis of teaching key and difficult point

How to use the past continuous tense in the adverb clause of time leaded by“when”or “while”.

Part4 Analysis of Teaching aims

Knowledge aim Master the usage of the past continuous tense in the adverb clause of time leaded by“when”or “while”.

Ability aim Make the students the real masters in class while the teacher himself acts as the director.

Emotion aim Enable the students to fall in love with English classroom activities and learn to cooperate with each other.

Part5 Analysis of Teaching Methods

1). Task-based Language Teaching

I will give students four tasks. (Listen2a,listen2b,pairwork,groupwork).Students can grasp the key point by means of finishing these tasks. They can enjoy themselves in learning English during the tasks.

2). Situation Approach

I will create enough communicative situations to stimulate students’vision and hearing, so that they can get a better understanding about the past continuous tense with “when”or “while”.At the same time, their listening and spoken English will be practiced.

3). Communicative Approach

Students can learn to use the past continuous tense in the adverb clause of time leaded

by“when”or “while”by communicating with each other in pairs or groups.

Part6 Analysis of Teaching Procedures

Step 1 Warming up

Greeting as usual

Show a CAI about the earthquake happened at 1:46pm on March 11th in Japan. Ask: ──What were you doing at that time? ──I was sleeping. / I was reading a book. / I was doing my homework. (Review calls Ss’ attention about the past continuous tense. CAI can provide a real situation with its sound and picture, which is help to arouse their interest in the class.)

Step 2 Leading in

Show a picture of Mary and the UFO, ask:

──What was Mary doing when the earthquake happened? ──She was watching TV about the UFO when the earthquake happened. Repeat and write down the answer on the blackboard. Then point at the sentence and say:

Today, we will continue talking about the UFO by using the past continuous tense with “when” or “while”.

(The step of leading in is to let the students get to know the past continuous tense with “when” naturally.)

Step3 Listening

1. 2a Show a short flash of the UFO and an alien, lead students to imagine that the UFO landed on Center Street. Guess what did the alien do after he got off the UFO.

Do activity 2a── Play the recording the first time. Students only listen.

Listen to the tape for the second time and ask Ss to number the statements in the correct order.

Check answers after listening. Then ask Ss to read the statements together in order.

(Presenting the flash to Ss is to arouse their interest to the task, the UFO and the alien. At the same time, this step can help the students do task2a and 2b easily.)

2. 2b Listen again and complete the sentences with “when” or “while”.

Check answers and then give more examples of “when” or “while”.

(I think this step will impress and consolidate Ss’ learning the usage of “when” and “while” in the past continuous tense. Meanwhile, Students’listening ability could be practiced.)

Step4 Practicing

Pair work (Talk about what people were doing when the UFO took off. )

1. In order to do the task more easily, I show a flash that the UFO took off. Say:

The alien wanted to go home and the UFO took off. What were they doing when the UFO took off? Then show the picture on page 19, activity 3. And give the examples of conversation on the screen.

I point to the man who was taking photos, ask: What was he doing when the UFO took off?

──He was taking photos when the UFO arrived.

──While he was taking photos, the UFO arrived.

Repeat this by pointing to the other persons in the picture. 2. Ask students to ask and answer in pairs.

3. Ask some pairs to act it out in front of the class according to the pictures on the screen.

( In this task, students will get more impression of using the past continuous tense in the adverb clause of time leaded by“when”or “while”.Their speaking and listening abilities could be practiced.)

Step5 Consolidating

Groupwork (Ask Ss to do role play by looking at the picture on page19)

Ask Ss to play as the TV reporter, the girl, the policeman, the man etc. Then encourage Ss to act in front of the class.

(I think this step can intensify Ss’ ability of using the past continuous tense in the adverb clause of time leaded by“when”or “while”. Students will learn to cooperate with each other.)

Step6 Summary

Sum the usage of “when” and “while” in the past continuous tense.

(Summary help the students aware what is the importance of the whole lesson. )

Step7 Homework Encourage Ss to use “when” and “while” to give a report. (Students basic skills of speaking, reading and writing could be intensified after class. It also trains their good English study habits.)
