Step II. Ask the students to do the quiz in the warming up.

Step III. Are you tired? You should go out and have some sports. Doing more exercise is good for your health. Revise the names of sports you know. (relay race ,high jump, archery ,badminton, boxing, track and field, taekwondo, water polo, weightlifting, handball, cycling, field hockey, fencing, shooting, wrestling, horse-riding, synchronized swimming

Task I Make a report

Situation: As you are a sport reporter, you want to do some research on the students’ favorite sports in your class. Please interview your classmates which sport they like best? Why? And then finish the table on page 52.

Task II Tom and Lily are talking about their favourite sports and sportsman while watching the Olympic Games.

Step VI: homework

Task: Ask the students to organize different sports club. According to their own interests, they join in different sports club. Take part in some activities in their club, write a report about the activities and then present the reports to all their classmates in class orally.

Procedure:

I. Warming up: The T shows the picture of the Olympic Flag to the Ss. The teacher may ask a question like this: “Do you know the Olympic flag?”

1. T:---- Look at the picture. What can you see?-----A flag. Yes, It’s the Olympic Flag.

------What colour can you see?

------White ,black, yellow, green, red, blue.(Every flag in the world contains at least one of the colours in the Olympic flag.)

------Five rings join together.Can you guess what the five rings are?

-------They are five continents. They are joined together as a sign of friendship.

2.Check their answer and see who is the best in answering the questions.(pre-reading on p.52. Ask students to discuss the questions in groups. Then show their answers.)

Over 10,200 athletes from 200 countries took part in the 2000 Olympic Games held in Sydney. We watched so many exciting matches during those days. Our Chinese athletes really did well in their games because they know it was very important for us to win the bid for the 2008 Olympics.

Step 1. lead in:

Help students to review some sports’ names in English.

Step 2. Learn the passage about Yao Ming:

I. Show some pictures and information about Yao Ming and ask the students to guess who he is.

II. Ask students to open their books . Listen and read the passage about Yao Ming. While listening and reading, think about two questions:

1. How many points per game did he score in his last season with the Shanghai Sharks.

2. What is Yao Ming working hard to do?

III. Check their answers.

IV. Ask the students to read the passage loudly, Then discuss one question in groups of four.

What makes him/her great? ( Why do people like him?)

V. Listen to the student’s ideas and write on the blackboard.

Step 3. Ask students to describe their favorite stars orally.

(according to the task which teacher gave 3 days before)

I. Ask students to come to the blackboard to tell some information about their favorite sports stars ,but not to tell his/ her name. Then ask other students to guess who he is talking about.

II. Teacher presents her report on Deng yapping in written form.

Step 4. Ask the students to write a profile of their favorite sports stars according to the information they have prepared.

I. Give the students 5 minutes to write a profile of their favorite sports stars in the blank below their forms.

Deng ya ping is my favorite sports star. She was born on February 6th, 1973. She is 1.50metres tall and weighs 53 kg. She began to play ping pong when she was very young and in 1988 she was chosen to the National team. She has won 14 championships in the world matches and 4 gold medals in the Olympic Games. She does more than just playing sports. She sets a good example for others to follow. She is a player who works hard at her training and is strict with herself. So I think she is truly a great person.

IV. Ask the students to read their profiles in the front of the classroom.

Step 5. Homework:

The sports meeting of our school has finished. Which player do you like? Would you please interview him/her and write a profile of him/her.

Or you can choose one person you think is very great and write a profile of him/ her. ( He/she can be your parent , friend, classmate, or teacher.)
