Teaching aids

A recorder, a paper clock, cards and pictures

Note: ask the students to learn the new words by themselves before learning this unit.

Step 1 revision

1. Get one or two students to answer the questions quickly one by one for just one minute.

2. Number game.

Review the numbers 1-30. Get some of the students to stand up to say the numbers. Each says a number in order from 1 to 30 first, then from 30 to one. See who’s the winner.

Step 2

Teach the students how to express the time by using a paper clock

1. What time is it? It’s five / seven / two o’clock.

2. What time is it? It’s three-fifteen / eight-twenty / six-thirty.

Step 3

1. Show students 5 pictures and focus attention on them. Name each action and ask students to repeat the following:

(1) Go to school (2) get up (3) run (4) eat breakfast

(5) Take a shower

2. Pair work

(1) Teacher asks the students questions by using the pictures above and the time cards, and the students answer them

T: what time do you usually get up, tom?

S: I usually get up at 6 o’clock, etc.

(2) Get the students to ask and answer questions in pairs.

Step 4

Listening

1. (1b) (a) point to the twelve o’clock and have the students repeat “twelve o’clock” after the teacher. Repeat with some more clocks.

(b) Listen and match the times and actions. Draw lines from the clocks to the pictures

2. (2a) (a) show the picture in 2a. Point to the people lined up in the illustration and ask students to guess who they are.

(b) Listen to the tape twice and answer:

1) How many brothers does Rick have?

2) How many sisters does Rick have?

3) How many showers does Rick’s family have?

3. 2b (a) focus attention on the note on the right. Read it for the class. Ask:

Who do you think wrote the note?

(Call attention to the shower schedule)

(b) Listen to the tape twice. Ask students to fill in the time each family member takes a shower

Check the answers by asking

What time /when does Bob take a shower? Etc.

Step 5 Practice

1. 2c (1) ask the students to practice asking and answering questions about the shower schedule in 2b in pairs

(3) Ask pairs to present one set of questions and answers to the class

3. Interview

Get one (sa) of the students to come to the front. The other students interview him/her just like

Sb(to Sa): hello, may I ask you some questions?

Sa: yes, of course.

Sb(to Sa): what time do you usually get up?

Sa: I usually get up at 6:30.

Sc(to Sd): when does he/she get up?

Sd(to Sc): he/she gets up at 6:30 etc.
