Lesson 29.

I’ve never been out of China before.

What do you mean by “decorate the tree?”

Teaching Procedures:

Ⅰ. Showing aims:

1. Master some useful expressions.

2. Learn the grammar: the Infinitive.

3. Decorate the Christmas tree with the teacher.

4. To know something about Christmas Day.

Ⅱ. Revision

1.Check homework.

2.Revise the Infinitive. Get the Ss to answer the question correctly, then Ss practise “ ask and answer” in pairs, using The Infinitive and choose several pairs to perform their dialogues.

A: What did the teacher tell you to do yesterday?

B: The teacher told us to revise Unit 7.

Share the dialogue in class.

Ⅲ.Presentation

Take out a small Christmas tree , put it on the teacher’s desk. Ask some students to decorate it with some lights and put an angel at the top of the tree. Then get the other SS to describe the actions: He is circling the lights around the tree. He is putting an angel at the top of the tree. See if the SS can describe in English.

Ⅳ.Read and say:

Part 1. Speech cassette. Ask : What’s the date? What are Liu Tao and Jim doing? Play the tape for the class to listen and find the best answers by themselves. Check the answers with the whole class. Make sure they can answer correctly. Explain: a dream has come true; decorate the tree; a lot of fun; at the top of the tree; What do you mean by “ decorate the tree”? See if the SS can make sentences with them. Play the tape again fot the Ss to repeat.

Ask the students to make up a similar dialogue, and share with the class.

Ⅴ.Practise:

Read the dialogue in pairs. Have some of the SS read it for the class.

Ⅵ. Ask and answer:

Look at the dialogue in Part1. Have the ss ask and answer in pairs and write down the answers. Use the questions of Part 1 to help.Get some SS to share their answers in the class.

Ⅶ. Workbook:

1. Do Exx 1 orally in pairs. Have the Ss ask and answer in pairs. Check the answers with the whole class. The answers are: 2;5;3;4;1.

2. Do Exx 2 in the exercise books. Have the ss do it by themselves, then discuss in pairs. The answers are: 1. glad; 2. sad 3. afraid. 4. sorry. 5. angry; 6. happy.

3. Discuss the Chinese Spring Festival after class, with the help of the following questions:

Ⅱ. Revision:

1.Check homework.

Revise Lesson 29. Practise the dialogue of Lesson 29 in front of the class.

Revise some inventions. Have the Ss discuss it in groups of four, then get some groups to give out their ideas.

Have the SS give some instructions to decorate the Christmas tree.

Ⅲ. Presentation:

Show the Ss a picture of celebrating Christmas Day. Have the SS watch and have some knowledge about Christmas Day. The teacher acts Father Christmas

Ⅳ.Pre-read:

In small groups, get the Ss to discuss about Christmas Day.

Get the Ss ask and answer in pairs. Then share the answers with the whole class.

Ⅴ. Read:

Speech cassette. Ask : Who is Father Christmas? Play the tape for the Ss to listen and try to find the answers to the questions. Check the answers with the class.

Books open. Get the Ss to practise the dialogue in pairs. Give them a few minutes for them to discuss, then ask some of the SS to give their reports to share with the class.

Explain the useful expressions: on Christmas Eve; land on the top of; fill…with…; be based on Father Christmas, greet.

Ⅵ. Practice:

Have the ss make sentences with the useful expressions, see if they use them freely.

Then play the tape again for the Ss to repeat.

Ask the SS to listen carefully. Then stop the tape while the SS are listening, and ask them to go on reading. It can test the SS’ abilities to follow the passage as it is read on the tape.

Read the passage individually and help them to retell the story of Christmas.
