Unit 7 Living with disease

Period 2 Speaking 首医大附中 裴雪松 I.. Pre-speaking

.Brainstorming: Imagine that you are an expert on social problems, what is the most serious social problem today?Ask the Ss to discuss this question in pairs.

Present their ideas.

II. While- speaking

Step 1.Give students some information about how serious those problems are and ask them to take notes. Teachers give Ss examples to the Ss (AIDS. drugs. smoking. drinking).Then they can decide what is the most serious problem.

About AIDS 1. How many AIDS patients all over the world? Where are they? And are they young or old? (There are more than 40 million people in the world are living with HIV or AIDS. About 3million are children and more than 11million are between 15 and 24. The situation is especially difficult in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to the United Nation, there are 640 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa, and almost 27 million are infected with virus.) 2. What kinds of social problems can AIDS cause? (disease, death , crime and etc.) 3. How about the situation in China? (Most of the people who are living with HIV or AIDS in China are in some poor areas or villages and most of them are the youth and the middle aged people.)

About drugs 1. Is the use of drugs such as heroin, serious? Why do you think so? 2. What kinds of problems can the use of drugs cause? (death, crime, destroy the lives of more people etc.) 3. What should we do towards it?

About Smoking 1. Nearly everyone knows that smoking is harmful to our health. But why do people smoke?

(They think that smoking can relax themselves and some of them just regard smoking as a habit. etc.)2. What kinds of danger can it cause to our body? (It can make many smokers get lung cancer etc.) 3. Can you think of the other dangers of smoking?

About drinking 1. Do your parents drink? Do you think drinking is good or not, or it depends? Give your reasons. 2. Can drinking cause some problem to our body? What are they? (Yes, damage our brain , suffer from high blood pressure etc.) 3. Will drinking cause some social problems? Give some example. (People who get drunk may act irresponsibly and often get violent; drunken husbands beat up their families; drunken youngsters destroy things and disturb the peace, sometimes even committing crimes.)

Step 2. Language input (Useful expressions) --Repeat it to strengthen students’ ability of use it. Supporting an opinion , Challenging an opinion .I think that …, because … Perhaps, but what if / about …? First, … Have you thought about …? One reason is that … What makes you think that …? For example, … Could you please explain …? If we / they were to …, we / they could … If I were you, I would …

Step 3 . Group work: Ask the students to choose one of the problems, listed and prepare a role card on which you write down reasons why you think your problem is the most serious. Use the role card in group discussion and try to persuade the other group members that your problem is the most serious one.

(Teachers can give sample dialogue.) Give the Ss 5-10 minutes for preparation.

Ask 2 or 3 groups to report their conclusion and reasons.

III. Post-speaking Summary: As for all these social problems, we should work together, prevent them from

becoming serious through education, live and let live. Thus, we can have bright future.

IV. Homework 1.Ask the Ss to think other social serous problems and think about what can we do to prevent the problems.
